The Arizona Cardinals are looking forward to a promising season, largely driven by the readiness and recovery of their star quarterback, Kyler Murray. A sense of optimism and renewed energy permeates around the team, much of it focused on Murray's return to full health and active participation in the offseason program.
Last year marked the beginning of head coach Jonathan Gannon's tenure with the Cardinals. Unfortunately, it was also a period of significant challenge as Kyler Murray was sidelined due to an ACL injury sustained late in the 2022 season. The injury kept him from participating fully in team activities, but this year tells a different story. Throughout the offseason, Murray has been dedicated to his recovery, working tirelessly with the Cardinals' trainers to regain his full health. This commitment has allowed him to participate fully in the offseason preparation, which is a marked change from the previous year.
Reflecting on Murray's journey and where he stands now, head coach Jonathan Gannon has been full of praise. "Physically and mentally, I mean, he looks damn good. He looks damn good," Gannon remarked. The coach's confidence in Murray’s recovery is palpable, especially considering the obstacles the quarterback overcame last season. "You know, 'cause you gotta think, he played really good football for us; he had never taken a snap in this offense until Atlanta [in Week 10], you know what I mean, his first game back. I mean, he had a couple weeks of practice leading up to that, but no offseason program, no training camp. No however many games we played without him. Couple weeks of practice and then, you're going, 'Let's play football.'"
Indeed, Murray's performance upon his return was commendable. He completed 65.7% of his passes with an average of 6.7 yards per attempt, recording 10 touchdowns against five interceptions. Additionally, he showcased his dual-threat abilities with 244 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Despite these impressive stats, Gannon believes that Murray is now in an even better place. "So, I think from a mental and physical standpoint, right now where he's at, to even when he got back last year or even where he finished last year, I think he's leaps and bounds ahead," Gannon noted.
Kyler Murray's strong will and commitment have been key factors in his astounding recovery. "What I know about the guy, my relationship with him when I got this job: His will to win is extremely high," Gannon commented. This drive has translated into a leadership role, not just for the offense but for the entire team. "And if you detail out and lay out for him what is needed from him to improve himself, the offense, and the team, he is one thousand percent willing to do that," Gannon added, emphasizing Murray's commitment to the team's success.
Clearly, Murray's return is not merely about physical health. His mental preparedness and leadership qualities have also seen significant growth. "So, I love the guy, because he's done everything that I've asked of him and more. He's been a phenomenal leader on and off the field -- not just with the offense, but with the entire team," Gannon praised.
This season, the Cardinals have added new offensive weapons, including rookie wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., further bolstering a team that struggled at times last season. With Murray leading the way and new talents joining the roster, there is a palpable sense of excitement and expectation surrounding their campaign. The added depth and Murray’s revitalized form promise a dynamic season ahead for the Cardinals as they aim to make a significant impact in the league.
