In his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Carter didn't merely live up to expectations—he often exceeded them. From his first NFL snap nearly resulting in a sack during the 2023 preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, to his consistent performances across 16 games, Carter demonstrated the talent that made him a highly touted prospect entering the league.
Despite an impressive campaign, Carter fell just shy of capturing the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year title, which ultimately went to Will Anderson Jr. Nonetheless, his stats tell a compelling story of an emerging force in the Eagles' defensive line. Carter amassed 33 tackles, six sacks, nine quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles. Such performances placed him second among rookie defensive tackles in sacks and tied for second in quarterback hits. He also ranked first in tackles for loss with eight, showcasing his ability to disrupt offenses consistently.
Carter’s versatility was also put to the test early in his career. Eagles' defensive coordinator Vic Fangio experimented with Carter in different positions during training camp. "It's good. It's fun. I actually haven't been on the edge that much, but I always tell them if you need me anywhere, we got a package for it when I'm on the edge, and we'll see what happens," said Carter. His adaptability allowed the coaching staff to maximize his impact on the field, occasionally lining him up on the edge in certain defensive packages.
The departure of longtime defensive line leader Fletcher Cox left a significant void in the Eagles' defensive front. Carter, however, seamlessly stepped into larger responsibilities, drawing from his collegiate experience at Georgia. "I'm looking forward to it a lot. It reminds me when I was at Georgia. I was behind JD [Jordan Davis], Travon Walker, all of them good guys. And when them guys went into the draft, it was me and my class coming up, and we had to take that step and take a big role in trying to win another national championship," he reflected.
One of the standout moments of Carter's rookie year was a fumble recovery he returned for a touchdown, highlighting his knack for making game-changing plays. His knack for being at the right place at the right time, combined with his high football IQ, made him an invaluable asset to the Eagles' roster.
Despite not securing the Defensive Player of the Year title, Carter remains focused on his personal and team goals. "I keep my goals private, man, because I didn't get my defensive player of the year. I just want to be the best. I want to connect with my team. The main goal is to win the Super Bowl," he shared. This mindset underscores his commitment to both individual excellence and collective achievement.
Adjusting to the NFL's level of competition is no small feat, but Carter acknowledges the shift and embraces it. "I look at it as the same. It's just the league. It's going to be way better competition," he admitted, a testament to his readiness to face the challenges ahead. His long break from football before his debut season—his longest since his freshman year in college—only fueled his eagerness. "I was ready to play for a long time. That was the longest break I had from football since the start of my freshman year in college. So just getting back to it, I was ready, and I just made a play," Carter remarked.
