Golden State Warriors 2023-24 NBA Season Preview

As the Golden State Warriors gear up for the 2023-24 NBA season, head coach Steve Kerr faces the intricate challenge of assembling a stable and effective starting lineup. The Warriors, known for their dynamic style and strategic brilliance, are now at a crossroads where identifying the right combination of players could significantly impact their performance.

One of the critical uncertainties lies in the shooting guard position, previously held by Klay Thompson. Thompson, who had been a cornerstone of the Warriors' offense, often attempted eight to ten 3-point shots per game, contributing to the team’s impressive fourth-place ranking in 3-point attempts last season. Kerr’s task will now be to find a fitting replacement who can maintain or elevate this offensive dynamism.

Several candidates are vying for this spot, including Brandin Podziemski, De'Anthony Melton, and Buddy Hield. Each brings unique strengths to the table, with Hield's veteran experience and shooting accuracy standing out. "I want Wigs shooting six, seven 3s. I want Brandin, I want Moses, I want De'Anthony -- I want to be a high-volume shooting team," Kerr emphasized, underlining the significance of this role in his tactical framework.

Beyond the shooting guard position, the competition extends across the lineup. Kevon Looney and Trayce Jackson-Davis are contending for the center spot, with the versatile Kyle Anderson also being an option for small-ball center duties. Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins are fighting for a key frontcourt position, highlighting the depth and talent within the Warriors' roster.

Veteran Draymond Green is expected to retain his position, providing much-needed stability and leadership on the court. Meanwhile, Stephen Curry's role is undisputed as he continues to be the linchpin of the Warriors' offensive and defensive strategies. Reflecting on the lineup challenges, Kerr noted, "The starting lineup is going to have to be dependent not only on the first five fitting, but the second fitting as well. We've got a lot of work to do to figure out lineups. All the guys can do is compete, play their ass off."

Training camp will be a crucial period for Kerr to evaluate the players and determine the most effective rotations. His strategic outlook remains focused not just on the starting five but also on ensuring that the bench players are well-integrated and capable of maintaining momentum. "There is competition across the board. It's not as simple as, 'Who is going to be the 2?' It's got to be -- 'Who is going to be the 5? Who's the 4?' We know that Steph is the 1. But what's the combination?" Kerr remarked, underscoring the comprehensive nature of his evaluative approach.

The Warriors' fluctuating lineups last season, where they used 27 different starting configurations, illustrate the ongoing quest for the optimal setup. However, this season brings a sense of renewal. "This feels like a new beginning for us, whereas last year felt like an extension of who we already were. It gives us a chance to reinvent ourselves a little bit," Kerr observed.

Star player Stephen Curry also weighed in on the team’s current state and the plethora of options at Kerr’s disposal. "You've got a guy who's a connector and can put the ball on the floor, create like BP, and obviously me and BP started a couple times last year. You've got Buddy who can shoot, who spaces the floor, and is a veteran. We've got a lot of options," Curry said. His comments reflect the optimism and competitive spirit within the team as they adapt to new changes.

Kerr's belief in turning competition into a strategic advantage is evident. "It's easier when you know your starting five and you know your first four guys off the bench. Way easier as a coach knowing that. But we don't have that. So let's turn that into a positive and turn it into competition ... let's establish our identity out of that competition," he encouraged. This philosophy not only highlights the importance of individual effort but also the development of a cohesive team identity.

As the Warriors navigate through training camp and pre-season games, the determination of these critical roles will shape their journey in the upcoming NBA season. The blend of promising young talent and seasoned veterans will be key in establishing a balance that enables them to compete at the highest levels once again.
