New York Mets right-hander Christian Scott is slated for elbow surgery next week, a development that will keep him off the mound through the 2025 season. The surgery will address Scott’s ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and involve the installation of an internal brace, as confirmed by the team.
Scott has been out of action since July 21, and was officially placed on the injured list just two days later. The team initially diagnosed his injury as a UCL strain, but his elbow troubles date back to last season, when he missed over two weeks late in the campaign with similar issues.
Season Cut Short
Despite the promising start to his big-league career, Scott’s 2023 season has ended prematurely. In his nine appearances this year, Scott posted a 4.56 ERA with a 3.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His absence will be felt as the Mets push for a playoff berth.
“It's too early to tell. I'm not going to sit here and speculate when we don't have all the facts and all the information,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said regarding Scott’s condition. “We've got to wait till the doctors and all the people that have to read the MRI and all that, and then we'll make that decision.”
Injury Plagued Rotation
Scott is not the only Mets starter facing health issues. Key pitchers Kodai Senga and Paul Blackburn are also missing from the rotation. Blackburn was recently sidelined due to a spinal fluid leak in his back, further thinning the Mets’ pitching options.
Despite these setbacks, the Mets have managed to maintain an 83-68 record entering Wednesday. They are currently tied for the league’s second wild-card spot with the Arizona Diamondbacks and hold a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves, the first team outside the playoff bracket.
Playoff Crunch
The stakes continue to rise as the Mets prepare to travel to Atlanta next week for a crucial three-game series. This matchup could have significant playoff implications, potentially determining the Mets' postseason fate. The team remains focused on their remaining games, hoping to secure their spot in the playoffs.
Navigating through a season beleaguered by injuries, the Mets are exercising caution with their players. Manager Carlos Mendoza has emphasized a measured approach regarding Scott's recovery, prioritizing long-term health over immediate returns.
